Sheriff’s recruit in grave condition; one of 25 trainees hit by car in South Whittier crash
Authorities said Friday a sheriff’s recruit was in critical condition after being hit by a car Thursday night.
The accident occurred in South Whittier at about 9 p.m. Thursday on the 91 Freeway, west of the 405 Freeway, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials.
Authorities said the sheriff’s recruit was heading west when he was struck by a Toyota Camry traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes. Officials said the driver of the Camry was taken to a hospital but he is expected to be OK.
The recruit’s name was not released as officials are still determining what led to the collision.
The sheriff’s chief recruit master, Capt. Paul Durning, was not responding Friday at the time the records were released. Calls to Durning were not returned.
The recruit is undergoing surgery at the hospital, said officials, who did not say where the recruit was being treated.
The recruit’s car insurance policy was paid for by the county, officials said.
The recruit was the first victim of a series of accidents that occurred Thursday night on the 91 Freeway.

LASD spokesman Sgt. Ed Winter said the collision occurred just before 9 p.m. on the 91 Freeway near Whittier. Winter said the car hit the recruceturned left, and he sustained a head injury. Durning, the recruit master, was in the car with the recruit when the incident occurred.
Winter said the victim was taken to L.A. County-USC Medical Center with serious injuries and died shortly after 9 p.m.
