A ticketing app glitch created confusion among English fans who had been told they would be able to buy tickets for Friday’s match against Iran in Basel.
The World Cup ticketing app was down over the weekend and, when it came back on, all tickets that had been bought from it had already been used, meaning some fans were left with no way of seeing the match, despite being able to get their tickets online.
England’s victory over Iran was one of two games in Basel. The rest will be played between Friday, when the World Cup’s opening match takes place, and the final match on Sunday.
The Daily Mail revealed that the glitch was a result of a software bug that caused it to fail to process transactions correctly and, as a result, sell only the tickets that already had been used.
This meant that any tickets bought online and downloaded later – and which had not yet been used – appeared as if they were still available to buy, with no chance of being sold to fans already there.
But it was too late to avoid buying tickets on the day. So the English Football Association has now told fans that they will be able to buy tickets through a different method.
The FA’s chief executive, Greg Clarke, said the delay was “beyond unacceptable” and announced extra security measures to be taken over the tournament.
The World Cup website also reported it was working to get tickets in for the Iran v Netherlands match at 15:30 GMT on Sunday.
